Understand what it means to be distracted while driving

A sudden car accident caused by drunk driving, aggression, drowsiness or negligence can greatly harm victims. Another type of auto accident is caused by distractions. Distractions while driving can cause a driver to look away from the road, take their hands off the wheel or think about something that isn’t related to driving. 

Many drivers become distracted, but there are a few distractions that take away driver’s attention more than others. These kinds of distractions open drivers up to auto accidents. Here are a few common driving distractions that lead to auto accidents:

Some minor distractions while driving may involve seeking an animal run across the road, sneezing or trying to find the right exit. Some of these things can’t be avoided. However, there are many distractions that drivers cause themselves. Here are just a few:

  • Texting and calling: One of the most common causes of distracted driving is caused by phones. Phones can distract drivers when they receive calls and texts. Drivers may even try to answer calls and texts while in motion.
  • Changing the radio or AC: While cars are equipped with radios and AC controls, they can lead to distractions. Drivers may try to change the setting on their radio and AC by freeing a hand from the wheel.
  • Eating and drinking: While many people get fast food, eating and drinking while driving can be a distraction. Drivers may try to open their food bags or eat while driving, which can take away concentration from the road.

Knowing how you may be distracted while driving can help make you a safer driver. But, you can’t make other drivers safer. You could become a victim of distracted driving and need to learn about your legal options.
