The hidden hazards of distracted driving

On Behalf of | Jan 4, 2024 | Car Accidents, Personal Injury

In the age of smartphones and constant connectivity, our roads are facing a growing menace: distracted driving. Seeing the devastating consequences of this firsthand, we can break down the dangers and perils of distracted driving in simple terms, so both adults and teenagers alike can stay safe on the road.

It is crucial to understand the importance of acknowledging distracted driving because distractions tempt everyone at some point or another while behind the wheel.

What is distracted driving?

Distracted driving is not just about texting. It includes any activity that takes your attention away from driving, your eyes off the road or your hands off the wheel.

This can be eating, adjusting the radio, chatting with passengers in the car, talking on the phone, or, yes, texting while driving. Even a split-second distraction can cost your life or the life of another human being.

Texting takes the cake

It is critical to begin with texting because, unfortunately, it is one of the most common types of distractions drivers face every single day. Most drivers do not understand that texting and driving are like driving while blindfolded. You would not get behind the wheel without being able to see, right?

Well, texting takes your eyes off the road, your mind off the task at hand, and your focus away from the one thing you are supposed to be doing: driving, and only driving.

The numbers do not lie

Distracted driving is more than just a buzzword. It is a serious, nationwide problem that is becoming worse every year with every technological advancement.

Ironically, vehicle manufacturers build modern vehicles with features that can be dangerous, like GPS devices, complicated video monitors, radios, and more, to attract buyers.

According to the National Highway Safety Administration (NHTSA), over 3000 people were killed in crashes involving distracted driving only a few years ago. That is at least 3000 lives ruined. 3000 broken families. The price of distracted driving is simply too high for anyone to afford.

Legal consequences

Aside from the obvious safety reasons, there are legal consequences for distracted driving. If you cause an accident because you were on the phone, talking to someone, or texting, you could be responsible for all damages and injuries.

Yes, that might include the loss of someone’s life. After a distracted driving accident, insurance rates typically increase, and there may be additional consequences in addition to the legal ones.

Distracted driving is a danger we can all help mitigate. By understanding the risks and making conscious choices, we can contribute to a safer world for everyone. Remember, it’s not just about obeying the law. It is about protecting your life and the lives of others.
