Dealing with the aftermath of a car crash

On Behalf of | Mar 13, 2023 | Car Accidents

Car accidents happen every single day. In fact, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration documents millions of car accidents each year. If you are involved in a car accident that is not your fault, you deserve justice.

While the moments following the car accident can be chaotic, to say the least, it is important to understand that what you do in the wake of the crash is very important. Here are three important steps you need to take immediately after a car crash.

Determine if anyone needs an ambulance

Your safety as well as that of your passengers should be your top priority after the accident. Immediately following the crash, move your car to a safe spot and check if everyone is okay. Of course, you cannot tell on a quick scan if none of the vehicle’s occupants have sustained hidden injuries. This can only happen when you visit the hospital for a comprehensive check-up.

Call the police

According to Maryland laws, you are required to call 911 when the accident in question results in an injury or fatality, when drunk driving is involved or when the car cannot be moved to safety. Upon arrival, the police will investigate the accident and write a report on who they believe was responsible for the crash. This can be crucial when litigating your case.

Protect your rights

Besides your safety, this is perhaps the second most important thing you need to do after the crash. It is not uncommon for the insurance company to ask for a statement immediately after they learn about the accident. Also, the other driver might and/or their insurance might want to offer a settlement even before establishing the extent of the damages. However, talking to the insurance company or accepting a settlement before understanding the extent of your injuries or property damage can be a costly mistake.

The most effective way to protect yourself after a crash is to have legal guidance behind you.
